i. Job Analysis

Job analysis is the process of gathering and analyzing information about the content and the human requirements of jobs, as well as, the context in which jobs are performed. This process is used to determine placement of jobs. It defines the organization of jobs within a job family. It allows departments to identify paths of job progression for employees interested in improving their opportunities for career advancement and increasing compensation. The process is designed to place positions into families and zones based upon assigned duties, qualifications and competencies as measured by the five criteria found in the Zone Placement Matrix.

i. Job Evaluation

Job evaluation is the systematic process of determining the relative value of different jobs in an organization through salary surveys. The goal is to compare jobs with each other in order to create a pay structure that is fair, equitable, and consistent for everyone. This ensures that everyone is paid their worth and that different jobs have different entry and performance requirements. In the absence of job evaluation, it may happen that high value jobs may receive less pay than low valued jobs. When the employees come to know about the differences, they may become dissatisfied

Generally, the main characteristics of job evaluation may be summed up as:

  • A method with a systematic approach.
  • An analysis of the work involved in its starting point.
  • An attempt to determine the requirements of the work involved for any incumbent.
  • A process by which jobs in an organization are appraised .
  • A process of analyzing and describing positions, grouping them, and determining their relative value by comparing the duties of different positions in terms of their different responsibilities and other requirements.
